In September of 2004 we piloted our Direct Assistance system for Disaster Help Alabama, the organization designated by FEMA to handle volunteers and donations for the state of Alabama. It was the first time requests for assistance were made directly on the Internet using the same database supporting a local call center. Call center volunteers simply went to the web site on behalf of those they were speaking to. Surprisingly, over 60% of applicants were able to access the Internet which dramatically reduced the labor requirement at the call center. Those in need were also able to go on-line and modify or update the status on their requests.

Organizations providing service, such as UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) in Mobile, AL. were able to receive requests for service from Disaster Help Alabama electronically. Disaster Help Alabama staff simply "referred" a person who needed assistance to each organization much the same way volunteers are referred to organizations. Because eCoordinator was used for both operations, organization records only needed to be entered once regardless of whether they needed volunteers, provided services or required donations (see our Donations Management System).
